From the soaring Gothic spires of the Duomo to the quiet bohemian charm of Brera, Milan blends world-class art and history with effortless style. Highlights include the Duomo and neighboring Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Leonardo's The Last Supper, the medieval Sforza Castle, the gallery-lined streets of Brera, and the canalside energy of the Navigli district, best experienced at aperitivo hour.
Day 1 — Arrive · Duomo
Arrive and settle into your hotel overlooking the Duomo spires. Take an early walk around the piazza as the evening light catches the marble facade, then dinner at the nearby Ristorante Galleria in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, or at Conte Ugolino.
Day 2 — The Last Supper · Sforza Castle · Brera
Milan is best seen on foot, and today is built around its two icons: The Last Supper and the Duomo itself, from the rooftop terraces down through the cathedral floor. After a break for lunch, cross town to the Sforza Castle and its quiet gardens, once the seat of a Renaissance duchy. Nearby, the Church of San Maurizio holds a fresco cycle worth the detour. Close the day in Brera, Milan's old artists' quarter, wandering its gallery-lined streets before a relaxed dinner at La Prosciutteria.
Day 3 — Via Montenapoleone · Fashion District
A coffee and a pastry at the historic Caffè Cova, a Milanese institution since 1817, fuels a morning of strolling and shopping along Via Montenapoleone and the surrounding designer streets, the heart of Milan's fashion district. Lunch at Bacaro Montenapoleone, tucked just off the main strip.
Day 4 — Lake Como · Bellagio · Varenna
A short train ride from Milan brings you to the shores of Lake Como, where the Alps rise steeply behind villas and terraced gardens. Spend the day on a boat cruise across the lake, with stops in Bellagio, the lake's most storied town, known for its steep cobbled lanes and lakefront cafes, and Varenna, a quieter fishing village on the eastern shore with pastel houses tumbling down to the water. Return to Milan by train in the evening.
Day 5 — Navigli · Depart
Start the morning at the Mercatone dell'Antiquariato, or another open-air market, browsing for antiques and local finds. In the afternoon, walk to Navigli, Milan's canal district, stopping at the Columns of San Lorenzo along the way. Find Vicolo dei Lavandai, a tiny, picturesque alley with old public laundry basins still standing. Enjoy an aperitivo overlooking the water, then dinner at Osteria di Posto before departing.
