Italy

Cliffside palazzi, lemon-grove suppers, and a private boat to the secret coves of Capri.

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most overbooked, overphotographed stretches of coastline in Europe — and it remains, in the right hands, one of the most extraordinary trips you can take. The difference is entirely in the design. We send clients in the right week, to the right hotels, and we plan their days around the crowds, not into them.

The week we design

Six nights, two bases. Three or four nights in Ravello — quieter, higher up, the gardens at Villa Cimbrone in the morning before the day-trippers — and two nights in Positano or Praiano below. A full day on a private boat to Capri (we book the nine-thirty captain, not the eleven, and we eat lunch ashore at Da Paolino, not on the boat). A day on the path of the gods. An evening cooking class with a Cetara family that has had the same kitchen for four generations.

What we get right

The hotel rooms with the view (and the rooms without it — there is a difference of fifteen hundred euros a night, and not every traveler wants the difference). The driver who knows the back road from Ravello down to Atrani when the main road is closed. The boat captain who takes you to the Grotta dello Smeraldo when there are no other boats there. The restaurant in Conca dei Marini where the lemon-grove terrace seats twelve and the chef will sit with you afterward.

Who it suits

Honeymoons. Couples on the trip of a lifetime. Small friends groups of four to eight when the villa is right. Families with older children. Not a destination for travelers who don't want to deal with stairs — the Amalfi Coast is mostly stairs.

When to plan

Nine to twelve months out. The good rooms at the four hotels we send clients to book that far ahead. Late-summer trips (mid-September) are the sweet spot — warm water, thinner crowds, lower rates.
